Caulking is probably the most important element to keeping water from getting behind building materials and components.  It also is the most overlooked and under maintained aspect to home maintenance. Caulking has a finite life and when it fails it can have costly consequence with wood rotting and mold growth.  It doesn't hurt to do an annual inspection of one's exterior to catch early signs of failure.
